Stop GTN Xpress!
For years, communities in the Pacific Northwest have been standing up to fossil fuel corporations. Now, TC Energy (the company behind Keystone XL) is trying to quietly expand the GTN pipeline with an additional 150 million cubic feet of gas per day while also adding a new gas compressor station in Morrow County, OR. This proposed expansion project is called GTN Xpress.
By selling this expansion as “routine maintenance” the permitting process is shorter and faster than for new pipeline construction. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is expected to make a decision about GTN as soon as January 2023. That makes public engagement now even more urgent to defeat GTN XPress!
GTN XPress is expected to result in more than 3.24 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. The increased pollution would be the same as adding 754,000 passenger vehicles on the road per year until 2052.
This project would be a step backwards on Washington’s and Oregon’s commitments to decrease emissions by 95% and 80% by 2050. Those are commitments communities fought hard to secure and GTN XPress would make these targets even harder to reach by increasing emissions significantly. We must come together to secure a safer future for our communities by stopping GTN XPress.
Communities along the pipeline route in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and BC will experience increased health risks from the expansion of the GTN pipeline, if FERC approves this proposal. A 2021 study from Indiana University found that proximity to higher amounts of volatile emissions from compressor stations were linked with higher death rates.
Continued investment in fossil fuel infrastructure, like GTN XPress, burdens utility ratepayers. Gas prices are already increasing in cost while renewables steadily decrease. Ratepayers would pay the cost of fossil fuel expansion through their utility bills.
Instead of investing in dirty fossil fuels like GTN XPress, our communities need investment in a just transition to clean energy and energy efficiency.
