Recently, two major reports have been published that detail the public health impacts of methane gas in our community's homes, apartments, and buildings. A Review of the Evidence: Public Health and Gas Stoves, written and published by the Multnomah County Health Department, confirms that gas stoves release dangerous air pollutants that increase the risk of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems.
This follows the release of another regional report, Methane Gas: Health, Safety, Economic, and Climate Impacts, which was authored by local leaders and experts in our community and 76 different organizations across the region signed on in support of its findings.
To protect public health, improve air quality in homes, and mitigate climate change, both reports recommend replacing gas stoves and other gas-burning appliances like furnaces with electric alternatives.
